Oscar Me This!

Topic of the week? Oscars of course. Now to some it's about the movies, to the rest of us superficial folk, it's about the gowns (in some cases costumes). I thought most of them did a better job at the Golden Globes. Anyway, I will not categorise the looks, not that I ever do, but here are the ones I thought were worth mentioning.

Natalie Portman in Rodarte: I get she's pregnant but really she can do better than that. The colour is beautiful on her but that's as far as it goes. The dress is too bland and the matching shoes, clutch and earrings? Didn't do it for me at all.

Mila Kunis in Elie Saab: The Black Swan starlet certainly deserves an award for her Red Carpet looks. I for one, am very impressed. I love the dress and the colour is beautiful against her pale skin. Pure perfection. One of my favourites of the night.

Anne Hathaway in Vintage Valentino: I really disliked this look. The matchy lipstick and nail polish killed it for me. I used to look forward to seeing what she's going to wear, after her last few misses, I'm scratching her off my list.

Hailee Steinfeld in Marchesa: Doesn't she look adorable? Apparently she helped sketch this dress with Ms. Chapman. I think she looks like a princess and it's very age appropriate. Hell, even I'd wear it.

Gwyneth Paltrow in Calvin Klein: Loved it. Not particularly something I would wear, but she can't go wrong this one. Champagne is definitely her colour.

Jennifer Lawrence in Calvik Klein: Now I get she's going for the simple look. And she looks like a bombshell. Claire Danes and Emma Stone pulled it off at the Golden Globes, but for the Oscars? I'm not so sure. I even read somewhere that it looked like a baywatch swimming suit. True though, no? But with a figure like that and a face like hers? She makes it work somehow.

Jennifer Hudson in Versace: She's curvy and sexy and she looks good. The dress hugs her curves in the right places but something's off. And I'm not talking about the tangerine colour of the dress with her purple shoes (not shown in picture), the bust looks wrong.

Amy Adams in L'wren Scott: This is elegance and glamour. She looks beautiful. Not sure about the jewellery though, even though it is worth $1.3 m. Eek!!

Melissa Leo in Marc Bouwer: This is wrong. So wrong. This is an example of a fashion disaster. I really can't say anything more.

Halle Berry in Marchesa: Alas, she gets it right after many misses. Beautiful dress, the colours looks great on her, I love that she's not wearing a necklace instead, she's wearing a pair of dazzling drop earrings. She doesn't need more.

Annette Benning in Na'eem Khan: I actually liked it despite the many hate reviews. I thought she looked good, and I loved the hair.

Michelle Williams in Chanel: It's definitely a step up from the daisies, but I'm confused. I like it and I don't. My problem with it, is it reminds me of you know how women in Arab magazines are digitally covered up for censorship, and you just don't know what the dress looks like exactly, because you're not sure where the dress begins or where the photoshopping disaster begins? THAT's what it looks like to me.

Scarlett Johannsen in Dolce & Gabbana: Her face? Flawless. The rest? Nooooooo. And I don't think I need to justify my hate for this dress. Yes even with the back cut.

Hillary Swank in Gucci: I don't hate it. I do have a problem with the no necklace, no earrings, no bracelet though. Pick one. ANY. It makes all the difference. Barely pass I think.

Helen Mirren in Vivienne Westwood: This woman knows how to dress for her age and always looks spot on glamourous. Well done.

Helena Bonham Carter in Colleen Atwood: You have to give it to her, she never ceases to amaze. The Union Jack garter made me chuckle.. And look, matching shoes and no sunnies. Can't wait to see what she comes up with next.

Mandy Moore in Monique Lhuillier: I love the colour on her. At one point I squinted to see where the dress begins because I can't really tell. I have a problem with it though, I don't like how the crystals don't continue to flow on the gown, gradually disappearing. Instead there's a line in the middle of the dress that has my full attention. Not smart for women with hips.

Florence Welch in Valentino: I loved it. My friend thinks it looks amesh. The pale yellow dress with her pale skin and her crazy flaming hair, worked. I'm not sure anyone else can pull it off but Flo definitely made it work.

Nicole Kidman in Dior Couture: I shake my head in mere disappointment. This is a disaster really. It looks like someone tried to make a wedding dress using chinese take out table cloths and oregami skills. And she tops it with orange shoes. Bad Nicole.

Reese Witherspoon in Armani Privé: A lot of people loved this look. Personally it did nothing for me. See. this look so many times, nothing new, and the Raquel Welch updo definitely proved this look to be very dépassé. Too safe in my opinion.

Camila Alves in Kaufman Franco: Love love love love. Yes it's very revealing but her hair and jewellery make her look so elegant. I love it. Well done Camila. I applaud you. Another favourite of mine.

Cate Blanchett in Givenchy Couture: I wasn't so sure about this dress when I first saw it, then again I hadn't seen the back. The more I look at it the more I love it. By the end of the day it will definitely be a Bambi favourite. Cate Blanchett almost always gets ir right doesn't she? She definitely brings couture to the red carpet.

And now my lovelies, the song that's been on repeat all day.

Oscar-ized,

Gone Oscar Wild!

So I didn't watch the Oscars. (the time diffence is mad) but I did raid the internet for red carpet photos. And Saw the best and worst dressed photos. I think I'd be on the worst dressed list because honestly, I disagree with most of these rankings. And wow, Avatar didn't win best picture.. What a shocker! (no sarcasm I really am surprised, I would've bet money on that movie winning the award, but then again, I believe almost everyone thought the same thing) So anyway, my lovely Candy Floss had her own list (click here) and boy do we have different opinions. This is why fashion is so diverse and so open. So we'll start off with

My Worst Dressed List

Zoe Saldana in Givenchy The bodice is beautiful but it just doesn't go with the rest of the dress.. And how many poodles had to die to make that ugly thing? Honestly.. But kudos for being gutsy. Even though you've gotta be pretty drunk high on something and to wear that in public.

Charlize Theron in Christian Dior The back is pretty, but the front? What a disappointment. It killed any chance the dress had of being wearable.

Virginia Madsen in.. I don't even know what she's in, but what was she thinking?
There's so much going on, with the royal blue and black, and the see-through chiffon on top of the lace bodice, then lace on top of the chiffon and you have a belt and there's a floral attempt going on at the back. And don'tget me started on the hair!

Mariah Carey in Valentino I don't know if it's the dress that I don't like, or if it's her in it. The dress is simple and pretty but she looks like a buffalo. It's not for her figure at all. What a shame! She murdered the dress!

Sandra Bullock in Marchesa She looks so bla in this dress. It's not sexy, or fab. A lot of detailing but it just didn't do it for me.

My Best Dressed List

Carey Mulligan in Prada That was in almsot everyone's Worst Dressed list, but I loved it. What's not to like? Beads? (not really beads, more like mini forks and scissors but it worked anyway so..) Check! Sweetheart Neckline? Check! Different? Check! Fabulous shoes? Double check! I think it works. Loved the look. Loved the dress. Just beautiful!

Amanda Seyfried and Jennifer Lopez in Armani Privee I don't understand how these 2 dresses were on the worst dressed list. Everything about them oozes glamour and Red Carpet Chic. Of course I loved J Lo's dress more than Amanda's but I think they're gorgeous and I would so wear them.

Penelope Cruz in Donna Karan You can say it's so 'deja-vu', and you can say nothing new.. But these dresses are lassics. You can never go wrong. They're so elegant and fabulous that everytime anyone wears a dress like that, I will stop and admire. Beautiful!

Vera Farmiga in Marchesa Now that is one hot tamaleeeeeeee... The colour, the cute, the detailing.. I lvoe everythign about the dress. It is faaaabbbb! Two thumbs up for Vera! Well done!

Cameron Diaz in Oscar De Le Renta I'm not being biased because he's my favorite designer, but honestly, how stunning is that dress? I think it made almost all the Best Dressed lists. You know why? Because it's Oscar! So glam. I love that it's worn on pale white skin and love the bright red lips with the retro hair! Perfection!

Rachel McAdams in Elie Saab Again, I;m not being biased because he's from my home country, but I loved the dress before I realized he was the designer. It's a typical Elie Saab cut, and the colours are so pretty. Very butterfly-ish no?

Miley Cyrus in Jenny Packham Now that was truly shocking. I would have never thought Miley Cyrus would be my ultimate face on the red carpet. Despite the fact that her head is as big (if not bigger) than her torso. The dress is stunning. The champagne coloured gown, in my opinion, would've looked better on even whiter skin, but I'm going to give it to Miley anyway. She looked feminin, sexy, elegant and just fabulous.

Now there were other who worse beautiful dresses but I can't fit them all like Demi Moore in Versace, Sarah Jessica Parker in Chanel, Zoe Kravitz in whatever it was she was in, Samantha Harris wore a beautiful Elie Saab gown as well. Definitely something I would pick out for myself. Helen Mirren and Meryl Streep were so elegant and their dresses were so age appropriate. Katherine Bigelow's dress was too boring! Samantha Harris and Deborah Ann woll were clueless when it came to gown choosing, and I still don't know what to make of Maggie Gyllenhaal's Dires Van Noten number or Diane Krugers Chanel dress. Hillary Swank and Vanessa Hudgens were too 'out there' with their extremely revealing dresses. Nothing left for the imagination.
