Catchachoo

Good ol' Jimmy decided to give free shoes.. Well, it's not really giving, it's more like a competition, but bottom line is.. if you win, you get a free pair of trainers.

Basically these fab new trainers will be going on a erm.. strut ?!? in the streets of London, and you're supposed to catch them. If you do, you get to keep 'em, or choose another trainer from this new collection. How do you know where the trainers are? Ahh good question.. beauty of technoloogy. You follow them on Facebook, Twitter and Foursquare where tehre will be regular updates. Way to go Jimmy Choo. Seems like someone has taken over their marketing department, because honestly, that's great marketing. If I were in London, I'd skip work and follow a pair of stylish trainers.

On your mark, get set... GOOO!!!!!!!!!

Happy reading

When I was younger I used to read so much. I'd finish 2 books a week, the older I got the more lazy I got. If I'm not busy with work or out with friends, I'd be watching TV and surfing the web. I know I know, I should invest my time in reading and such but it's just not working. So the only time I get to read is when I'm at the beach. So I picked two books, that I just MUST finish by the end of June.. I hope.. Lauren Weisberger's Chasing Harry Winston and Elizabeth Gilbert's Eat Pray Love. If you don't have time to read books, try to make time. And I know the beach is distracting but I make it a point to actually shut the world out - just me, my ipod, my drink, the book and the tanning effects of the ever-so-bright sun.

Archie Comics announces...

Archie Comics were a big factor in my love for fashion when I was growing up. It's true the clothes may not have been that great, but wouldn't you want Veronica's wardrobe? I remember having problems with the mismatching colours. Back then it was a big no no, now you can get away with it,like a fuchsia skirt with a red sweater. But still, I tried to do my hair like Betty's, but to no avail, and I tried matching my clothes to Ronnie's and that was a disaster (it was hard for me as I was quite pudgy).

Anyway, over the years I just switched from Archie Comics to fashion magazines, such as In Style, Vogue, Harper's etc.. That was a good thing.
So, after my long intro to Archie Comics, my friend (Milky Way) tweeted a piece of info that was on CNN.com about Archie Comics announcing a new gay character, Kevin. Now supposedly he comes to Riverdale High and Veronica starts to fall in love with him. He tries to let her down gently before admitting to Jughead that he's gay. Does that ring a bell somehow? *cough*clueless*cough*

Apparently they're trying to keep it modern and current. Let's face it homosexuality is no longer the taboo it used to be, well at least in some cultures. But do you think parents would allow their children to keep reading Archie Comics after that? Will there be restrictions?

I don't think this is going to pass so quietly.

Fashion advertising went up a notch!

One of the blogs I follow religiously is Street Style London, and I just fell in love with today's post. Basically she and American Apparel worked on mixing street style with new items from a shop (basically theirs) to create ads. For example Jill (from street style London) chose Emily (the model in the pic) to meet her at American Apparel dressed up in whatever she wanted, she picked out what she liked, incorporated it into her own wardrobe and a few shots on the streets later, VOILA! A great ad. If you like the trousers for example you can actually click on the link and buy them. I think it's a great way to advertise. Well done!

Spring so cool

Hello hello! I'm in quite a cheery mood. Woke up early, went for a walk on the beach.. It was beautiful! And not at all romantic if that's what you're thinking, it was more like a jog and I was all sweaty :S, but it was beautiful. Came home, showered and headed to work. Obviously I haven't started work, I've been working on a collage all morning. Why did it take me that long? Because I wanted it to be perfect. And The whole outfit is going to be my next purchase, especially the Mulberry bag; Miss PFF also declared her love for that bag, and I totally agreed (we're kinda obsessing about it). Anyhoo, check it out, colour of Spring Cool, Beige and Denim, no two colours could look so incredible together.

Home-o-phobe

So I've been swamped with work! Ridiculously swamped. And if not at work, then at home. (damn freelancing)! And I have recently discovered that I might be a home-o-phobe (yes I played on the word, pretty smart no?). If some of you, and I hope not, are still trying to figure out what that means, well, basically a fear of staying home. Why? I don't know if it's because I don't want to miss out on anything, or because I just really want to go out. Everything's fine at home, so no the family's not the problem, or maybe it's because I don't want to be alone since the 'rents are always out. And I started a detox program. It's not really detox, it's just a diet, but because I'm banned from alcohol, I decided to call it detox. So imagine going out almost every night to the swanky pubs of Gemmayze and not drinking. Sucks to be me I know. So I stayed in last night, even though I was home alone, after exercising I took a hot bath, got a bunch of DVDs and passed out while eating popcorn (which by the way, is permitted during a diet and is apparently healthy.. something to do with ldl and hdl and don't really care because I like popcorn. And Diet Pepsi? My new bff in the absence of alcohol. So until I have more time to make a fashion collage or write about a new trend, I maybe slightly MIA or probably give you certain updates with these.

If speakers could fly!

Yes yes, from the title of today's post, you can tell it's a bizarre invention! Brilliant, mind boggling, and mesmerizing none the less. What am I going on and on about? James Coleman's unique flying sound system. The way it works remains vague to me. Something to do with magnets or electromagnets, superconductors and such. Don't really care honestly. It's super cool and I want to get it. Can you imagine having flying objects in the house with music bursting out of them? It gives a whole new meaning to the term "surround system"! Oh and it's also touch screen and it looks real pretty! Super cool! I love it. Who wouldn't? IT FLOATS!!!!

Pie in the Sky

It has come to my realization that I rock in the kitchen. I am the queen of desserts. Trying out a few more recipes, if they work out, Betty Crocker beware, Bambi's gonna kick your ass! Ok that was harsh but it was an added drama value! At least I think so! Anyway, I'll give you the recipe soon I promise, but it's a long procedure. It took me 4 hours! Who knew apple pie takes that long? And it was my first time, so I'm guessing next time it'll take me less time to bake, and it'll taste even better. It's all those cooking blogs that got me in the mood. And besides Thai boxing, I think this is my second favorite thing that helps me release stress.. But that won't be a good thing, considering that all the pain, sweat and exhaustion at the gym goes to waste after one piece of pie! *sigh*

I received an e mail today from a friend of mine, it's an article from Prospect Magazine and I thought it's really interesting. I am going to copy and paste the info in to the blog for you guys to have a look.
Have you got erotic capital?
CATHERINE HAKIM 24th March 2010 — Issue 169
It can be just as valuable as a university degree—especially for women

Katie Price, aka Jordan, does not owe her astonishing success to university
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Michelle and Barack Obama have it. Carla Bruni and David Beckham have it. Jordan has even made a career from it. So great is the advantage “erotic capital” can bring to the labour market—especially in sport, the arts, media and advertising—that it often outweighs educational qualifications.

It’s a term I coined to refer to a nebulous but crucial combination of physical and social attractiveness. Properly understood, erotic capital is what economists call a “personal asset,” ready to take its place alongside economic, cultural, human and social capital. It is just (if not more) as important for social mobility and success.

Erotic capital goes beyond beauty to include sex appeal, charm and social skills, physical fitness and liveliness, sexual competence and skills in self-presentation, such as face-painting, hairstyles, clothing and all the other arts of self-adornment. Most studies capture only one facet of it: photographs measure beauty or sex appeal, psychologists measure confidence and social skills, sex researchers ask about seduction skills and numbers of partners. Yet women have long excelled at such arts: that’s why they tend to be more dressed up than men at parties. They make more effort to develop the “soft skills” of charm, empathy, persuasion, deploying emotional intelligence and “emotional labour.” Indeed, the final element of erotic capital is unique to women: bearing children. In some cultures, fertility is an essential element of women’s erotic power. And even though female fertility is less important in northern Europe (where families are smaller) women’s dominant position in this market has been reinforced in recent decades by a much-lamented phenomenon: the sexualisation of culture.

Since the contraceptive revolution of the 1960s, surveys from around the world reveal a dramatic increase in sexual activities, numbers of partners and varieties of sex. London now hosts an annual Erotica fair, showcasing the new diversity of sexual lifestyles and tastes. World Health Organisation research shows that humans see sexual activity as essential to quality of life—but men still rank sex as more important than women. Indeed, rocketing global demand for sexual activity of all kinds (including commercial sex, autoeroticism and erotic entertainments) has been far more pronounced among men than women. Sex tourism is essentially a male hobby, while erotic magazines for women often fail.

This creates an effect that should be familiar to any economist: the laws of supply and demand raise the value of women’s erotic capital, in particular their beauty, sex appeal and sexual competence. It is happening in Scandinavia as well as Mediterranean countries, in China and the US. The pattern is confirmed even in countries that are sexually “liberated” such as Finland and France. Men are two to ten times more likely to have affairs, buy pornography, seek lap-dancing clubs and erotic entertainments. And call girls’ earnings can exceed wages in nearly all the professions, despite working shorter hours.

It is true, as feminists argue, that some of these relationships can be exploitative. And, to a degree, women’s new advantage is concealed by the explosion of sexual activity among both women and men under 30, many of whom now regard one-night stands and flings as normal. In this age group there is a parity of libido, but the imbalance returns among men over 30—surveys around the globe find that women over 30 steadily lose interest in erotic games.

This is an implicit rebuttal to feminist thinkers (like Sylvia Walby, Mary Evans, Monique Wittig or most recently Kat Banyard) who argue that men and women are “equal” in their sexual interest, as in everything else. This is obviously not true, which is why it should not surprise us that some women do use sex, and their erotic capital more generally, to get what they want. It happens as often today as in the past, as illustrated by the daily sexual bargaining described in Australian sex therapist Bettina Arndt’s 2009 book, The Sex Diaries.

The sexualisation of culture affects public as well as private life. Beauty, sex appeal, social skills and the arts of self-presentation have increasing value everywhere, helping to sell ideas, products and policies. Popular culture especially valorises female erotic capital: just look at unkempt boy bands and glossy girl bands. Yes, men with high levels of erotic capital do better than those who don’t. But it is beautiful and elegant women who grace the advertisements for products of all kinds, from cars to detergent—not men.

The economic benefits of being physically and socially attractive can be substantial, especially in marketing, public relations, television, advocacy in the courts, as well as for actors, singers and dancers. But it’s broader than this: people working in the better-paid parts of the private sector are more attractive than those in the public and non-profit sectors. Tall and attractive people are more likely to be employed in professional jobs, like law or banking. For the ugly and short, it gets worse. Good-looking people can earn 10 to 15 per cent more than the average-looking, who in turn can earn 10 to 15 per cent more than the plain or ugly. The tall earn more than the short; the obese have earnings 10 to 15 per cent below average. Statistical analysis shows this beauty premium is not really just about cleverly disguised differences in intelligence, social class or self-confidence. Studies of lawyers reveal that there is always a premium for attractiveness that varies in size, but is not due to employer discrimination. The most attractive can earn 12 per cent more than the unattractive, and are 20 per cent more likely to achieve partnership in their firm, because they are more effective at pulling in customers.

Indeed, there is a 25 percentage point difference in average earnings between unattractive and attractive minorities. This impact can be as big as the gap between having a degree and no qualifications at all—although it ranks well below intelligence as a determinant of life outcomes.

Intriguingly, this means erotic capital—if seen as an economic endowment—is an especially important asset for people with few intellectual abilities and qualifications. In Brazil, investing in cosmetic surgery is seen as a sensible way of getting ahead in a culture where looks and sensuality count. In Britain, too, a 2009 survey of teenage girls found that one-quarter think it is more important to be beautiful than clever.

Like it or not, erotic capital is now as valued as economic and human capital. As Chairman Mao advised—walk on two legs.

Pregnancy symptoms, minus the pregnancy!

It's Monday! So soon! And I woke up with a major itch to cook, bake and eat! No I am not PMSing, I'm just craving. And no I'm not pregnant either. It's a ... hmm... I don't know what it is.. But I know a lot of people who go through that.. Men as well. Anyway, as I was about to look up images for pancakes (Been craving NYC's Bagatelle's pancakes since the second I swallowed the last bite 7 months ago), I came across this very interesting blog called Closet Cooking, by a Mr. Kevin, no last name, kinda like Madonna, Shakira, Cher, oh and I just realized his family name is Lynch (saw his e mail address). So, Kevin, realized that his meals have been quite boring the past few years so he decided to look up mouthwatering recipes and share them with the rest of the world, from appetizers, to desserts, dips to soups, salads to bread. Mouthwatering dishes I tell ya! I'm salivating as we speak.. errr type? So, I decided to try a few of these dishes, and I'll keep you posted with how it goes.. I'll try to take pictures, won't happen anytime soon, considering my ridiculous schedule but very soon, I promise. I'm so excited. I kinda feel like Julie in Julie/Julia, only not! Hope you have a fabulous Monday because mine doesn't seem to be heading in that direction.

Take the stink away from your stinker!

Ok so when I decided to share bizarre/random trends with you, I wasn't expecting to be so amused, especially as I found this bizarre thingamabob (yes, yes I know I stole it from The Little Mermaid, so sue me!) Today's not-so-stinky trend is called The Flatulence Deodorizer. Apparently it's not so new, but it is to me and I wanted to share. What it does is, it destinks (I made it up, but it makes sense, no?) your stink! Get it? No? It detoxifies your gas.. It deodorizes your fart.. Still don't get it? It makes your gas smell better! Hallelujah! I wonder if they ship to Beirut, I have a few birthdays coming up and these are perfect gifts. Seriously! It's a well deserved gift!

The Moon has a Secret

Today I'm keeping it ridiculously short and sweet. I've been swamped with work hence the inability to blog, however, you know how I always brag about my friends and how talented they are? Well I introduce you to Mariam Agha who's an animator. Click here to view her animation and to vote for her to enter the Top 200 Unsung Creatives on Wooshii. Not really sure what that means, but I'm guessing it's pretty cool for the animation world.
Hope you enjoy!

Tick Tock Blah! Pfft!

Happy Easter everyone.. I know I'm late but it's been a long fabulous weekend. And I am soooo dreading today! Being back at the office.. with so much to do.. and all I can think about is how much more fun it would've been if this whole week was off! *sigh* Here's a summary: Beach, Vineyard, Dinners (emphasis on the letter 's'), drinks (emphasis on the letter 'drinks'), shopping (my poor poor card, I'm sure plastic has feelings, because I could've sworn at one point it was screaming), lunches, coffees, boxing (new thing.. love it.. hate it.. then love it again), My Fair Lady, laugh-till-you-cry moments, just-wanting-to-cry moments, sun, lemonade, board games, and soooooo much gossip! Wow I'm even jealous of the weekend I had! I want it back! Better than travelling even though I really wanted to go to the Island! Which reminds me, I need to watch Shutter Island! That's all for today I need to get back to work and can someone tell Ms. Tick Tock Blah Blah to stop! Really she's killing me with this crap!
